Quentin Bryce
Quentin Bryce

Australia is governed as a federation and as a constitutional monarchy. The federal gouvernement is separated into three branches :

  • The legislature : the bicaremal Parliament, defined in section one of the constitution as comprising the Queen, the Senate and the House of Representatives.

  • The executive : The Federal Executive Council, in practice the Governor-General as advised by the Prime Minister and Ministers of State.

  • The judiciary : The High Court of Australia and other federal courts, whose judges are appointed by the Governor-General and advice of the council.

Julia Gillard is the Prime Minister of Australians and leader of the Australian Labor Party. Quentin Bryce is the Governor-General of Australia.

Australia is one of the most developped and modern market economies in the world.

It's an industrial country and a country of abundance of natural ressources. Agriculture is an important sector too.

Australia is one of the few countries without debt.

Flora and Fauna

Australia is a land like no other, with about one million different native species. More than 80% of the country’s flowering plants, mammals, reptiles and frogs are unique to this country.

Paradise of wildlife, Australia's an immense nature reserve. Among the thousands of bird species, 300 are only in Australia, like kookaburras, lyrebirds, or emus. Tasmanian devil, wallabies, wombats, dingos or red kangaroos and koalas (emblematics animals) are unique to Australia.

Australia's flora is original and unique because of it's isolation.
We can found a lot of eucalyptus and acacias. Australia has over 1000 species of acacia, which Australians call ‘wattle’.

Deserts cover a large portion of the land in Australia (18%). Most of the deserts are found in the central and north-western part of the country.

The best way to know Australia's fauna and flora is to go there.

Cadeaux

J-19, le compte à rebours est lancé !

N'oubliez pas en préparant vos valises de glisser dedans un petit cadeau pour la famille qui vous accueille ( Ne prenez pas de vin ou d'alcool car les mineurs ne peuvent passer la frontière avec de l'alcool dans leurs valises).

Nous vous demandons d'apporter aussi un magazine de votre choix (même déjà lu) que vous offrirez aux professeurs de français en Australie. Ils ont toujours besoin de lectures fraîches pour leurs élèves.

Australian language : specific vocabulary and idiomatic expressions

As here, in Alsace, we add our personal expressions into our national French, while the Australian change their English with expressions and vocabulary farmiliar to them.

Australia was discovered by the English, english became the national language and is distorded as time. Some words come from Yagara, aboriginal language from Brisbane, wherease other were distorded by the oral with the time. This new language is called « Slang ».

Some expressions are used everyday, like «
G'Day Mate » and not « Good morning » or « Good afternoon ».
Other words and expressions :

How are you going ?:How are you ?
She'll be right : everything is all right
No worries : no problem
Cheers mate : thank you
Oi : excuse me
Take it easy or Hoo Roo: good bye
Bush : areas outside of major cities and towns
Oz : Australia
Aussie : Australian
Arvo : afternoon
Bananaland : Queensland
Banana bender : Queenslander
Kiwi : New Zelander

There is a lot more of vocabulary, but we stop here. The pupils who will go to Oz will certainly learn other things over there.
